A pixie cut, sharp cheekbones and doe eyes framed by spiky lashes: Twiggy was christened "The Face of '66" at just 16 years old. In collaboration with @condenastarchive, we look back at a selection of images that capture the model's command of the decade – 60 years on from receiving this title. Born Lesley Hornby on this day in 1949, she was discovered by Daily Express journalist Deirdre McSharry after she spotted Twiggy's photo, showcasing a newly cut cropped style, outside a hair salon in Mayfair. McSharry asked to meet her, soon declaring Twiggy "The Face of '66" in a newspaper article, and leading to her first Vogue shoot one month later. In 1967, American Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland brought Twiggy to the US, where she graced the magazine's cover. The teenage model became a global sensation, securing international campaigns and even her own clothing line and Barbie doll. Though she retired from modelling full-time in 1970, she remains an unmistakable visual reference for 1960s fashion. Twiggy's doll-like yet androgynous look signalled a cultural shift towards the modern and rebellious spirit of the Swinging Sixties, in which women's fashion evolved from the hourglass shapes of the 1950s towards straight lines, geometric silhouettes and miniskirts. Swipe through to see: 1.
