so many things I’ll unpack here👇🏼 This message reveals a lot about what is happening to designers right now: → companies confusing producing design artifacts with actually doing design → AI being used as a justification for organizational decisions that are much more complex than “the machine can do your job now” → the erosion of professional confidence when your expertise is suddenly framed as replaceable → how deeply work, identity and self-worth get entangled, especially after years spent becoming good at something → the brutal gap between knowing you have value and wondering whether the market will still recognize it → the psychological cost of layoffs that we barely talk about while everyone debates productivity and AI adoption → and the uncomfortable reality that our profession is changing, while the discourse around that change often lacks any humanity I don’t think pretending nothing is happening helps designers. But I also don’t think reducing design to “AI can make screens now” comes remotely close to describing what designers actually contribute. There’s a human being on the other side of every “efficiency” decision. And sometimes the hardest part after a layoff isn’t finding the next job. It’s rebuilding your own understanding of your worth after someone made you question it. I’ll do a reel next about AI layoffs + how to cope when this happens to you, because I think we need to talk about this much more openly. ❤️‍🩹
